Administrative / biographical background:

In March 1800 a meeting was held at the White Horse and Griffin Inn to discuss calls for a subscription mill, whereby discounted flour would be sold to the poor and to subscribers. This led to the establishment of the Union Mill Society. The Society built a substantial new windmill and granary, the foundation stone of which was laid on the 10th June 1800.

At some stage the society was incorporated as the Whitby Union Mill Industrial and Provident Society Ltd. The Society was wound up in July 1888 following storm damage to the mill, and the mill itself demolished c1900.
