Catalogue description Diary of John Jeffreys

This collection consists of a diary and weather notes together with miscellaneous memoranda recorded in a Yorkshire Memoranda Book (a pro-forma diary containing almanac material for 1793) kept by John Jeffreys. From January to February 1793 the diary records activities in and around Whitby, where Jeffreys seems to have acted as a tutor and apothecary's clerk (and names those who he bleeds). In March 1793 he enters HMS Montague as a clerk (at the instigation of Mr Richardson of Whitby, the purser). The rest of the year records shipboard activities.

At a later point memoranda (at least some written while on blockade duty off Rochfort 1806) have been added to blank spaces in the diary, in which Jeffreys records details of his navy career and those he has served with.

This diary is accompanied by notes made by Frank M Sutcliffe, Curator of the Whitby Museum.

This item was deposited by Mrs J Pickney of Sleights in October 1935.

A note in the diary reads "This book I carried with me on board the Montague in 1793 and was with me in 12 ships after, which I properly belonged to, to wit the Magnificent, Fame, Ville de Paris, Blenheim, Prince George, America, Hind frigate, St Albans, Harpy brig, Illustrious and lastly the Achile... In March 18 1814 1 was invalided out of the Achile after 21 years service upon a pension of £18 a year."
