Application by John Nicholls Tom of Truro, maltster, who stated that on 17 June last his malthouse in Truro contained 2,358 "Winchester bushels" [a standard weight] of malt, the duty on which he had paid £304.11s.6d. His warehouse had been destroyed by fire together with the contents: Collector of Excise to allow John Nicholls Tom full amount of duty paid.

John Hearle Tremayne, esq., requested to preside as chairman at next Quarter Sessions.

Consideration to be given at next sessions to closing of Launceston gaol. Notice of intention to be advertised in the two Cornwall papers.

Report of visiting justices to Bodmin gaol

1. Called attention to an Act making provision for maintenance of prisoners sent to the county gaol, and bridewell from corporate towns paying no county rate.

2. Drew attention to the arrears for maintenance of bastard children in prison, amount to over £100 at 29 Dec. 1826, in attempt to recover the arrears and prevent accumulation of same in future.

3. Reported that all expenses of the gaol, including extraordinary charges for new buildings and repairs, was less than corresponding quarter in previous year, current expense being "only" £533.6s.11d. and the charge for buildings and repairs £414.19s.1d.

4. Drew attention to insecure state of the bridewell, where several escapes had recently been made. Recommended alterations be made to remedy defects. In no way could escapes be attributed to "any want of Zeal or Vigilance in the Governor".

5. At request of Governor, asked that consideration be given to salary of turnkey of the Sheriff's ward, then £25 p.a., because recent stricter regulations had considerably reduced his emoluments, and his was a responsible position.

Appeal by Lanteglos by Camelford against order of 2 June last for removal of Grace, wife of John Cooke, and their children Thomas (14), Ann (13), Eliza (11), Mary (9), John (7), Richard (4) and William (2), from Tintagel. Appellants produced evidence that John Cooke, the husband, was in "particular places" from Lady Day 1814 to Christmas 1827, which were 25 miles away from both parishes, with a view to proving that Grace, his wife, was in other places during the whole of that same period and "thereby to establish the fact of non access".

Appellants also produced evidence from a Robert Collins that for the whole of that period, he and Grace Cooke had lived together as man and wife, and that neither he nor Grace Cooke had left Tintagel during that time. Of the seven children, all but the eldest were begotten and born during that time. The two eldest of the six younger children were baptised as children of John and Grace Cooke, and the other four were baptised as children of Grace Cooke only. All were treated and reputed as children of Robert Collins and Grace Cooke and were wholly maintained as such until Christmas 1827. The husband had never been seen by Robert Collins in either parish in all that time, nor by three other witnesses called. Court rejected husband's evidence: order "absolutely" confirmed relating to Grace Cooke and Thomas Cooke. Also "confirmed" regarding Ann, Eliza, Mary, John, Richard and William Cooke. Lanteglos by Camelford to pay Tintagel £5 costs.
