Cambridge University Library Add.MS7744 and Add.MS7897-7899 comprise the papers of the Marten family, dating from between 1808 and 1964.

The family members best represented in Add.MS7744 are Sir Alfred George Marten (1829-1910), QC, judge, Conservative MP for Cambridge and Fellow of St John's College, and his son Sir (Alfred) Amberson Barrington Marten (1870-1962), later Chief Justice of Bombay but at the time of writing a schoolboy, undergraduate or young barrister. Also featured are Alfred George's father Robert Giles Marten (1792-1839) and uncle George Marten (1801-1872), Amberson's brother Sir (Clarence) Henry (Kennett) Marten (see below), and the South African missionary Ida Marten (fl. 1962-64). The papers include some early sporting photographs from the 1880s and, as with Add.MS7897-7899, much ephemera of public school and university life from the late nineteenth century.

Add.MS.7897-7899 are the papers of Sir (Clarence) Henry (Kennett) Marten (1872-1948), provost of Eton and historical tutor to Queen Elizabeth II. They include a large number of high quality photographs taken at Eton between 1879 and 1947, including many of royal visits, and also school reports on Marten written by the young A.C. Benson. Add.MS.7897 has been divided into correspondence and other papers.

As much of Add.MS.7744 was found in bundles, it has been decided to retain these divisions in this catalogue. The papers have been divided into one box of correspondence and two of other papers, the bundles within each box being placed in chronological order of the family members represented.

Throughout, the abbreviations AGM, AABM and CHKM refer to Alfred George Marten, (Alfred) Amberson Barrington Marten and Clarence Henry Kennett Marten respectively. All other persons have been described by full name and dates on their first appearance. In the case of members of the family, their relationship to the main person in the bundle is also given.
