Administrative / biographical background:

Also known as the United Hebrew Congregation following the amalgamation of the original Temple Street Synagogue with the Charlotte Square Synagogue (which had broken away from it in 1867) in 1879. The new synagogue was opened in 1880 and extended in the 1920s. The congregation became part of the new United Hebrew Congregation in 1972 but the synagogue remained open until 1978.
