These photographs are from the John Edward Thornton papers deposited at Vernon Park Museum, Stockport. John Edward Thornton, 1865-1940, was the founder of the Thornton-Pickard Manufacturing Co. Ltd., whose photographic apparatus became famous world-wide Thornton resigned from the Company in 1898 but the Company retained his Patents. He left for America in 1913 and returned to the U.K. in 1919/20. By 1930 he was earning £3,000 p.a. from Kodak and had been a prolific inventor throughout his life. He died in Bury (Lancs.) Infirmary on 5th October, 1940. |
