Description:

Although there had been a community of Protestant dissenters in Thurlstone from about 1752 onwards, the first chapel was begun in 1786. It was originally known as Netherfield Independent Chapel and later as Netherfield Congregational Church. From 1973 it was known as Netherfield United Reformed Church. It was greatly extended and re-built and the present church dates very largely from that date. The first register begins in 1788 with baptisms and from that date the records are continuous until the church closed in 1981. Records comprising:

3. Management committee minutes 1924-1971;

 

4. Women's meeting minutes 1906-1925;

10. Insurance 1893-1971: Comprising, Correspondence regarding insurance policies 1952-1971, Insurance policies 1893-1971;

 

11. Constitution 1981: Constitution of St Andrew's Church, Penistone, the constitution was drawn up upon the merging of Netherfield United Reform Church and St Paul's Methodist Church April 1981;

 

12. Property records 1954-1956: Including, Inventory and valuation, 20th century, Mortgage between four trustees of the church and Penistone Building Society 1954, Schedule of deeds 1955, 1956, Typewritten extract from will of Sarah Greaves 1855, etc;

16. Church history 1807-1900: Comprising various histories of the church;

 

17. Miscellaneous 1925-1981: Including, various pamphlets, etc;

 

18. Printed material 1548-1981: Including, The Yorkshire Congregational Year Book 1953-1954, The United Reform Church Yorkshire Province Provincial Handbook 1980-1981, 1982-1983, etc;

 

19. Photographs 20th century: Comprising 17 photographs of interior and exterior of church, including inscriptions, windows etc.
