Introduction

Portslade Community College was formed in September 1972 by the merger of Portslade Boys' County Secondary School and the Girls' County Secondary School.

Boys', Girls' and Infants' Schools

The schools had their origins in the Portslade and Hangleton National School which was erected in about 1841 on land given by George Hall of Portslade House and was situated in the South Street area - between present day Robin's Row and Windlesham Close. A school house was subsequently built in 1853 (BGP 50).

In 1871 land for a new school at Locks Hill was purchased from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners with a donation of £100 from Miss Hannah Brackenbury. The buildings, which were known as the Brackenbury Schools, were designed by Edmund Evan Scott and they were formerly opened on 25 May 1872. In 1881 separate departments were created for the infants and mixed classes, while in September 1883 a separate girls' department was formed and an additional classroom was erected. From 1884 the schools were called St Nicholas Portslade and Hangleton Boys' and Girls' Schools. By September 1894 work had begun on the construction of two new classrooms for the boys and girls.

On 23 July 1903 the new infants' school, which lay opposite the Boys' and Girls' Schools, was formerly opened. They were then known as St Nicholas' Boys' School, St Nicholas' Girls' School and St Nicholas' Infants' School.

Boys' School

In November 1924 the Boys' School moved across the road to the premises formerly occupied by the Infants' Department. The schools were reorganised in September 1929: St Nicholas' Boys' School (on the west side of Locks Hill) became the Senior Boys' School, while the younger pupils were transferred to the new St Nicholas' Junior and Infants' Mixed School (formed from the Girls' and Infants' School) which occupied the premises formerly used by the St Andrews' Schools. The Senior Boys' School was closed on 2 August 1940 due to its dangerous position and the boys and staff were transferred to the new Senior Boys' Council School at Mile Oak. In March 1941 thirty six boys were evacuated to Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire where they attended Bolton Brow Senior School. In September 1945 the school became the Portslade Boys' County Secondary School.

Girls' School

The schools were reorganised in September 1929: the St Nicholas' Girls' School combined with St Nicholas Infants' School to form St Nicholas' Junior and Infants' Mixed School and occupied the premises formerly used by the St Andrews' Schools, while the older girls were transferred to the newly formed St Andrew's Senior Girls' School which also occupied the same premises. The Senior Girls' School was closed on 4 October 1940 due to its dangerous position and the girls and staff were transferred to the new Senior Girls' Council School at Mile Oak.. In September 1945 it became the Portslade Girls' County Secondary School.

Junior School

Formed in September 1929 when the St Nicholas' Girls' School combined with St Nicholas Infants' School to form St Nicholas' Junior and Infants' Mixed School, which occupied the premises formerly used by the St Andrews' Schools. From January 1937 when the infants were transferred, it became known as St Nicholas' Junior Mixed School. The foundation stone for the new school, which was on a site adjacent to the old school, was laid on 7 June 1963 and the official opening took place on 12 July 1967. For records of this school see ESC 135.

Infants' School

The school was reorganised in September 1929 when the St Nicholas' Girls' School combined with St Nicholas Infants' School to form St Nicholas' Junior and Infants' Mixed School, which occupied the premises formerly used by the St Andrews' Schools. In January 1937 the infants were transferred to a temporary home in the vacant Windlesham House School until a new building was provided. It was then known as Portslade County Infants' School. For records of this school see BH/F/3.
