Catalogue description GRESWOLD OF MALVERN HALL

The Rev. Henry Greswolde who was rector of Solihull from 1660 until his death in 1700, showed considerable interest in the arrangement of the family's archives. Apart from the copious notes he made in minute handwriting about the properties he bought or inherited, he arranged groups of documents in parchment bags: these bags were labelled with the name of the property to which they referred whilst the documents within them were given a bag reference number and a number within the bag. A considerable amount of time has been spent in reconstituting the contents of these bags and these have usually been dealt with at the beginning of each section.

In the section for deeds, the names of the parties are listed in brackets: where one name occurs frequently, it has been underlined. In most instances, names are spelt as they appear in the records, though a few names which appear with great regularity, such as Greswolde and Ebourne, have been standardised to avoid confusion.

King's Norton and Yardley which now form part of the county borough of Birmingham, were still a part of Worcestershire in the nineteenth century: hence, they are always referred to as being in Worcestershire.
