Title: Photograph of [Jocelyn Brudenell Pelham] Earl of Chichester (1871-1926)
Description:

In the uniform of a captain, with a sergeant-major and six sergeants, among them Harry Kingswell; nd, [?1915]

If the photograph was taken before the Great War it would probably have been at one of the camps between 1908 and 1911

However, Pelham is shown wearing a black arm-band, probably as a result of the death of his younger brother, Herbert Lyttelton Pelham (1884-1914), who was killed with the regiment at the battle of the Aisne on 14 September 1914. From the archive of the Royal Sussex Regiment, it seems likely that the photograph was taken between November 1914, when Kingswell joined a reserve battalion, and September 1915 when Chichester took up a staff appointment, possibly returning to visit his senior NCOs in the Reserve Battalion camp
