Description:

Copy of a memorandum and report by Dr Frederick Barnes, Chairman of the Asylum Committee, which was sent, via Mr Digby, to the Trustees of Dr John Radcliffe's Will. Having contracted to erect the central building and one wing of the Asylum at a cost of £7,250, the Building Committee "bargained at the same time with the Builder that he should finish the remaining wing for 1927 if required within two years". However, the subscription towards the Asylum building was then insufficient to allow the Committee to order the Builder to proceed with the second wing and they, therefore, appealed to the Radcliffe Trustees "whether any further assistance beyond the munificent donation that has already been made from their funds may be expected." The Asylum Committee went on to recommend that they thought it "a desirable addition to the Honors already attached to the Name of Radcliffe in Oxford" that the new institution be named the Radcliffe Asylum and that its building and site should be conveyed to the Radcliffe Trustees.
