Administrative / biographical background: |
The donor's father, Frank Roberts, worked as an engineer at Metrovics and a keen athlete and member of Salford Athletic Club. He went on to train his nephew, Billy Roberts, who eventually won a gold medal in the 4x400m relay race at the Berlin Olympics. Frank Roberts died at the age of 45 of asthma as a result of fire-fighting duties during the Second World War. The donor's mother, Ellen Roberts (nee Wharton) worked negotiating with farmers for their milk in the pre-Milk Marketing Board Days. She also worked at Weaste Cinema, playing piano accompaniment for silent films, as did her brother-in-law, Norman Cunliffe. |
