Letter book of G.G. Ducarel at Burdwan and Calcutta (as D2091/X4):- 1783 9 July : John Ham. Failure of Robert Grant to settle debt to P. Francis. 15 July : Henry Ramus. Despatch of money and elephants [for timber felling], which might arouse opposition of the country people. 21 July : J.L. Fix at Serampore. About payments to Richard Goodlad [of Rungpoor] for sale of cloths. [31 July]: [George] Shee. Offering him a 'remittance' by a Danish ship. Because of the peace Ducarel is not to sail on a Danish ship but await an English one. 9 August : Ensign James McLean. Unable to help him over his appearance before a court martial on a charge connected with auditing accounts. 16 August, 6 Sept. : Colonel Tolley. Method of remitting money to London by a Danish ship through J.L. Fix's agency. 18 August : J.L. Fix. Same matter and insurance of the money. 20 August : [Humphrey] Howarth. Similar matter, and clearing up Flor's estate. Deplores party intrigues in the Company and reports the Company had applied to Parliament to borrow £1,500,000. Naming his attornies as John Shore, George Shee, Thomas Vowler Short, and John Baptist Esteve. [Similar letters sent to other correspondents. In December, January and February he made many final payments in settlement of accounts, totalling about 7,600 current rupees; a further 11,000 current rupees were paid to his account with J.L.
