Cooke and Nuttall Ltd, Horwich, paper manufacturers

Physical description: 16 Series
Administrative / biographical background:

Leonard Cooke began the manufacture of paper on the site of the Vale Mills in 1862, and, after his death, the business was carried on by his son, Horace Cooke. At this period, the firm chiefly produced Wrapping and Duplex papers.

In 1898, Mr T.Y.Nuttall joined the firm and the mills were completely rebuilt and equipped with new machinery. Cooke & Nuttall Ltd were the first manufacturers in Great Britain to produce 'Kraft' paper.

Horace Cooke retired in 1917, and T.Y.Nuttall died in 1920, after which the business was carried on by Captain W.E.Nuttall, who had joined the firm in 1902.

The mills closed in October 1983.
