This collection consists of the casebook of deliveries made by Mrs Katherine Manley, midwife 1720-1764 which contains details of 3223 deliveries; a few folios at the end of the volume contain recipes for cures of women's ailments, receipts for rent paid and biographical information about Mrs Manley. Also certificate of marriage of Charles Manley, esq., and Katherine Tinnley, at Walton, Yorkshire.

Administrative / biographical background:

At some stage the casebook came into the possession of Dr Samuel Clark, who gave it to Dr Richard Ripley. Dr Ripley appears to have presented it to the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society in 1855.

 

Katherine Tinnley married Charles Manley esq. in Walton, Yorkshire, in 1698, but appears to have been a member of, or related to, the Tinnley family of Whitby. She applied for a midwife's licence in 1720, it being granted in 1720. She died in 1765 and was buried in Whitby Parish Church.
