The records form the longest continuous run for any Quarter Sessions series covering the largest single local government unit in England and Wales; for Devon was never subdivided in the manner of other large counties.

 

The series contains material from a number of the special classes listed in the Guide as well as differing in bulk and content at different periods of its 380 year span.

 

Some specimens of the contents of individual boxes at different dates are given below.

Bundles for 1769 contain some papers dated 1669.
