Administrative / biographical background:

This collection was donated to the Museum by a member of the Smales family in May 1968. It was transferred to the library and archives in June 1981.

 

The brig Liberality was built at Sunderland by John Scott. In 1813 she was bought by Robert Usherwood and Thomas Sidgworth of Pickering, Usherwood buying Sidgworth's half share in 1818 from his administratix, Ann Sedgworth. The brig was lost in April 1824.

 

The sloop Mary Ann was built in Whitby by Peter Cato in 1821 for David Hunter. By 1824 she was owned by Robert Usherwood. She was wrecked at Staithes in 1834.
