Administrative / biographical background:

A note on lead mining records, Swaledale and Arkengarthdale

The mines in the Pomfret-Denys royalty (including Surrender, Old Gang, Lownithwaite, Blakethwaite, Swinnergill, Keldside, Lane End and most of the South Swaledale mines west of the manor of Grinton) were known collectively as the A.D. Mines. The initials stand for either Alexander Denton, the principal trustee for the estate of the Duke of Wharton in the 1730's or Anne Maria Draycott, the residual heiress of the Swaledale estate, who married the second Earl of Pomfret in 1764

In 1873 the A.D. Lead Mining Company Limited was formed to work the Lownithwaite, Swinnergill, Arngill and Surrender mines. Its managing director was Sir George Denys II, the principal mineral owner of the A.D. Mines as defined in (1) above. The company was more or less defunct from 1884, when its own debenture holders took control of the mines

In 1889 a new company was formed to work the mines on both sides of Gunnerside Gill, including the Old Gang and the only productive part of the ground leased to the A.D. Company in 1873, under the name of the Old Gang Lead Mining Company Limited. The latter was wound up in 1906

Any reference to the A.D. Mines in the main valley of Swaledale before 1873 is to the mines on the Pomfret-Denys royalties, as defined in (1) above. References between 1873 and 1889 may be to either the same or to the A.D. Company

The Arkengarthdale mines were leased from 1800 to 1821 by a Newcastle-based partnership, Easterby, Hall and Company. In 1805 or soon afterwards the same company leased the Derwent mines in the North Pennines and became known as the Arkengarthdale and Derwent Mining Company. This company did not lease any mines in the main valley of Swaledale, although its managing partners, Frederick Hall, managed the Old Gang mines under the Aldersons for a few years (1814-1818). It has no connection with either (1) or (2) above, and the similarity of the initials is purely fortuitous
