Administrative / biographical background:

Wandsworth Children's Receiving Home, Swaffield Road, SW18, taken over by the Council from the Board of Guardians in 1930 was re-named Earlsfield House Children's Receiving Home in November 1931. It was administered by the Public Assistance (later Welfare) Department until the outbreak of the Second World War, when the children were evacuated to residential schools. It was re-opened in 1945 and passed to the Children's Department in 1949.

 

Between its opening in 1951 and 1955, the small children's home at 5 North Drive, SW16, was managed by the same Managing Committee. For reference to this establishment after 1955 see minutes of Tudor Lodge Managing Committee.

 

In March 1958, the Managing Committee for Earlsfield House also became responsible for the management of the short-stay home at 94 Oakley Street, SW3 (previously a Girls' after-Care Hostel).
