The history of the firm of Gobbitt & Kirby, grocers and wine merchants can be traced in effect to 1817, when F.W. Gross and Company set up a general grocery and wine shop in the Thoroughfare, Woodbridge. The business was carried on from the 1850's by James Gross and Company, and from about 1895 by Mr. F.W. Gobbitt, who, in 1915, entered into partnership with R.W. Kirby. In 1946, the firm became a private limited company. Messrs. Gobbitt & Kirby ceased to trade on 28 February, 1974. |
