Administrative / biographical background:

In Dec 1855, William D L Shadwell Esq of Hastings sold two messuages on the Beach near the Fishmarket for £1175 to Henry Stevenson of Hastings, innkeeper (AMS5681/64/1). Stevenson also purchased nearby stables from the executor of Thomas Daniel in Dec 1867 for £780 (AMS5681/64/2)

The buildings were referred to as Cumberland Ho. and the 'Rising Sun' in a mortgage of 1881 (AMS5681/64/4). By the terms of Stevenson's will, dated Oct 1876, the property was devised to his wife Ann for life, then to pass to Jane Macey, wife of John Samuel Macey of Lowestoft (Suffolk), fish merchant. Her will, dated Feb 1884 (AMS5681/64/8) left the property to her surviving children - William George Macey and Eliza Eales Macey. They sold the inn and the neighbouring stabling to the Star Brewery Co Ltd. of Eastbourne in April 1895 for £2025 (AMS5681/64/22)
