Title: CORPORATION LEASE BOOK
Description:

This book consists mainly of copies of grants, leases, bonds and documents setting up various charities in the city. The first entry on f.6 states that it was started on 4 Aug. 1574, but the volume contains copies of a number of documents of an earlier date, the earliest being dated 4 Feb. 1507/8 see f. 56v.-7.

At the beginning of the volume the documents are copied out in full, in the language of the original, but towards the end of the book these are replaced by shortened entries in English. There is an index to the documents relating to charities see f.263v., followed by one covering all the documents in foliation order see f.264-266 at the back of the book. The foliation is original and the book starts on f.6.

For the sake of brevity this list is based on the following assumptions:

1. The grantor is always the mayor and citizens of Chester unless otherwise stated.

2. The grantee is 'of Chester' unless otherwise stated.

3. The original spelling of surnames is given.

4. The property is within the liberties of Chester unless otherwise stated.

5. The position of property is indicated only by place and street names and the river Dee, and these have been given in their modern spelling. Descriptions of dimensions and the ownership of adjacent property, which is usally very full, have not been given.

6. Towards the end of the book, the period of ninety nine years covers three lives usually named in the original.

7. Rent is expressed in the equivalent pounds and shillings e.g. 12d. is given as 1s.

8. In charitable grants and bequests only the substance of the more important clauses is indicated.

9. There are marginal notes from time to time concerning changes of lessees etc., which have not been noted in this list.
