5 August 1641 -- Petition of Margaret Wotton, Baroness of Marleigh, in the county of Kent, widow; for protection against certain indictments brought against her.

 

5 August 1641 -- Petition and remonstrance of Walter Steward, gentleman of the Privy Chamber, in answer to the petition of Nicholas de Franchi; presented by the Right Hon, Anne Steward, Lady Saltonne, sister to the petitioner.

 

5 August 1641 -- Petition of Nicholas Rowe and Thomas Hall, on the behalf of themselves and the rest of the owners and commoners in the level between Bourne and Kyme Ea, in the county of Lincoln by several decrees of sewers, 14,000 acres have been allotted to the Earl of Lindsey for the supposed draining of the level; the commoners having just exceptions thereto have been prevented from trying their right at law.

6 August 1641 -- Paper concerning the Earl of Suffolk; the Earl complains of an extent wrongfully obtained by one Geeres, a silkman, to whom Theophilus, late Earl of Suffolk, was indebted for wares, and desires that Sir Thomas Fanshawe, the King's remembrancer, may be commanded to make no further process upon the extent.

 

6 August 1641 -- Petition of Henry Hopkins, warden of the Fleet; petitioner has been sued on a charge of false imprisonment by Sir Edmond Plowden and Thomas Insley.

 

6 August 1641 -- Draft order for protection of the warden of the Fleet from actions commenced against him.

 

6 August 1641 -- Petition of Thomas Insley; petitioner, a chief constable, was, for not distraining of ship money, committed to the Fleet prays that he may have leave to continue his proceedings against the warden and others for false imprisonment.

6 August 1641 -- Petition of William Young, gentleman, prisoner in the King's Bench [to the Right Hon. brothers William Earl of Hertford and Francis Lord Seymour, Baron of Troubridge]; petitioner in his youth was servant to Edward late Earl of Hertford; prays for consideration of annexed petition.

7 August 1641 -- Petition of James Beverley, [to the House of Commons]; Sir Wm Bryers and petitioner are two of the commissioners in the county of Bedford for the execution of the late Acts for the relief of the north parts, and speedy raising of money for disbanding the army; Sir Wm. Bryers has shown underrating some and surcharging others, and has refused petitioner access to the assessments to the poll money.

 

7 August 1641 -- Copy of act of Common Council of the city of London, appointing certain persons to agree upon a settlement touching the election of sheriffs and other officers.

 

9 August 1641 -- Petition of Thomas King, His Majesty's sworn servant, in the place of gentleman waiter; was arrested contrary to privilege by Salter, a sergeant, at the suit of John Symmes; and imprisoned in the Poultry compter.

9 August 1641 -- Petition of Edmund Bouldsworth, servant to the Earl of Cleveland; was arrested contrary to privilege, at the suit of Robert and Nicholas Abdy.

 

9 August 1641 -- Edmund Bouldsworth to Mr Baker, messenger at Parliament House. Has been under arrest six days. The Earl of Cleveland moves this day for his discharge.

 

9 August 1641 -- Amendments to the Bill concerning the treaty with Scotland.

 

10 August 1641 -- Petition of Thomas Phillips, now prisoner in the Fleet. Was committed for causing Thomas Cammocke, Lord Rich's servant, to be arrested.

 

10 August 1641 -- Receipt for £5 from Daniel Hancock to John Browne, clerk of the Parliaments, for engrossing the large articles of the English and Scottish treaty.

 

[10 August] 1641 -- Petition of Richard Edwards, clerk; prays that the cause between him and Jeremy Powell, respecting the vicarage of Bucknell, may be heard.

11 August 1641 -- Petition of Richard Lilborne, respecting the manor of Thickley Puncherden, in the county of Durham, about which petitioner has been in litigation with Ralph Claxton and his father before him.

11 August 1641 -- Affidavit of Elizabeth Clarke, widow; has attended for the trial of Lord Morley, and has been put to very great expense in procuring counsel and witnesses.

 

11 August 1641 -- Copy of order of the House of Commons for the repayment of loans advanced for the public service.

 

11 August 1641 -- Petition of Vincent Delabarre, merchant, and company. About July 1639 a ship called the "Black Buck," of London, belonging to petitioners, sailing from Madeira to the Canaries, was attacked by a Dutch ship called the "Hope of Amsterdam," and after a severe engagement was forced to surrender. The Dutchman stripped the captain and crew of all they had, and landed them on the Island of Teneriffe. The petitioners pray for a grant of letters of reprisal as the only way for them to recover their losses.

 

12 August 1641 -- Petition of John Cooper and Daniel Wilgrice, of Great Yarmouth, merchants. Have been vexed in Parliament by Thomas Turner for non-performance of an order founded on mis-information on an untrue certificate of the masters of the Trinity House.

12 August 1641 -- Petition of Godfrey Havercampe, and others, creditors of the Right Hon. James, late Earl of Carlisle. Godfrey Havercampe and George Mold expended £5,041 11s. 9d. in setting forth for the late Earl a ship called the "Carlisle" to St. Christopher's and the Carribbee Islands, which expenditure was allowed by the Earl's auditor, Thos Littleton; of this sum more than £1,000 remains unpaid. The Earl was further indebted £100 to Thos. Littleton, which also remains unpaid.

12 August 1641 -- Petition of blanket makers of Witney, Oxon. Wm Howes, now deceased, and Wm Howes, his son, have for the last 30 years forced petitioners to have every bundle of sealed, and have thereby greatly enriched themselves.

[12 August 1641] -- Petition of William Holliman, of Norton in the bishopric of Durham, yeoman. Prays for respite from his creditors till he shall have opportunity of selling part of his land.

 

13 August 1641 -- Petition of George Warner, of London, merchant. Robert Armestead has not performed the two former orders in the cause respecting the ship called the "St John Baptist," and petitioner not having money to pay his workmen is liable to be arrested.

13 August 1641 -- Petition of Tobias and William Blakiston. In 1555 Robert Holgate, Archbishop of York, devised certain lands at Old Malton, in the county of York, for the foundation and endowment of a hospital at Himsworth [Hemsworth]. A moiety of the lands so devised passed into the petitioners' hands, Richard Battison, now master of the hospital, under pretence that the endowments of the hospital were misapplied, hath procured that the lands should be decreed to the hospital, and has put petitioners to great expense by practising with their tenant Geo. Watson.

 

13 August 1641 -- Petition of Dame Katherine Goldsmith, widow; prays that judgment may be given in her cause, against Sir Henry Marten.

13 August 1641 -- The charge against the thirteen Bishops impeached by the House of Commons, for promulgating certain new canons, and imposing a benevolence on the clergy.

1 Printed copy of "A grant of the benevolence or contribution to His most excellent Majesty, by the clergy of the province of Canterbury, in the convocation or sacred synod holden at London, Anno Domini 1640;" also "Ordinationes sive canones ecclesiastici in sacrâ synodo prædictâ facti, pro levatione et collectione Benevolentiæ, sive contributionis voluntariæs antedictæ, unâ cum censuris et poenis ecclesiasticis contra non solventes vel solvere recusantes."

 

13 August 1641 -- The Earl of Holland, Lord General of the Army at York, to Sir John Banckes, knight, Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas and Speaker of the Lords House of Parliament. Has received the order for disbanding the foot and artillery, and will obey it, but finds the gentlemen appointed to the service do not offer themselves to assist the officers in making up their accounts.

 

[13 August] 1641 -- Petition of Sir Ralph Freeman, knight. William Kniveton has presented a petition against petitioner and Sir Robert Pye. Prays that a day may be appointed for hearing.
