The church of St James Silverdale was originally built as a chapel of ease to Hastings St Mary-in-the-Castle. In 1902 a northern part of the parish of St Mary-in-the-Castle was transferred to the parish of Hollington St John the Evangelist and the church of St James Silverdale became a chapel of ease to that parish.
