Administrative / biographical background:

The Longwood Gas Company Ltd was first formed in 1859 and established works on Dale St in Longwood. It was dissolved and incorporated by AoP as the Longwood Gas Co in 1875. In 1902 it acquired additional works from the Colne Vale Gas Drysaltery and Manufacturing Co Ltd in Golcar. Longwood GC acquired the undertaking of the Slaithwaite Gas Co Ltd (formed in 1876) in 1914 and became the Longwood and Slaithwaite GC. However this company was itself purchased by Huddersfield Corp in 1919 and the works became holder stations. In 1949 they became part of the Huddersfield -Halifax Group of the NEGB.
