Administrative / biographical background:

Macclesfield High School for Girls was founded in 1880 by the Governors of Macclesfield Free Grammar School. These premises were sold by William Coare Brocklehurst of Butley Hall, Prestbury, in 1895 on condition that the High School should not be disturbed for ten years. In a codicil to his will, proved at Chester in August 1900, he bequeathed £1,500 to the High School ref WR 1900. In 1909 the school moved to a new building in Fence Avenue C S Davies, A History of Macclesfield pp 215-7. The school was named Macclesfield County High School in 1969. It closed in 1990
