Title: Theodore J Preston Journals
Description: The journals are written by Theodore Julian Preston, Surgeon, between the years of 1875 and 1882. They are personal, handwritten records about the medical status of people aboard the ship on a day to day basis. The box contains five official journals of Her Majesty’s ships, two relating to the ships, the Achilles and the Crocodile, and three relating to the Royal Naval Hospital at Plymouth, and one loose file.

Administrative / biographical background: Theodore Julian Preston was born in 1847 in Marylebone. He served as Assistant Surgeon on the HMS Triumph before 1875, HMS Crocodile from 1875 to 1876, and on HMS Achilles in 1877. He worked as a surgeon at the Royal Naval Hospital in Plymouth, England, from at least 1880 to 1882. In 1881 he married Margaret Shillinglaw in East Stonehouse, Devon, and they had several children. Theodore died in Greenwich in 1913, aged 66.
