Description:

INTRODUCTION

This is the twenty sixth volume of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) to have been catalogued in the West Sussex Record Office, and it has been compiled, in general, along the lines indicated in the first volume in November 1956. The class of Additional Manuscripts embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents, as distinct from the large family and estate collections, such as the Goodwood Ms., or accumulations from solicitors' offices, such as the Raper Ms., each of which is referred to and quoted by name. The majority of such documents have been deeds of title, though a healthy balance of a vast range of other material has been documented in these volumes. However, 23 years and 21,100 documents after the scheme was inaugurated, the sheer pressure of the weight of material to be catalogued has meant that in future catalogues of title deeds, instead of being the detailed calendar that has been the practice up until now, will appear in summary lists, with the accent being on the property concerned, rather than, as hitherto, on the parties involved and the technicalities of the type of legal conveyance being used

In this twenty sixth volume, a number of estate collections are catalogued, such as the records of the Loxwood House Estate (Add Mss 20,038-20,056); the Manor of Rogate Bohunt (Add Mss 20,309-20,364); the Hamilton family (Add Mss 20,806-20,877); and the Warnham Lodge Estate (Add Mss 20,879-20,928). The volume also includes catalogues of the papers of a number of local businesses, including those of Frederick-Adames, wine and spirit merchant of Chichester (Add Mss 20,072-20,074); Eastgate Pharmacy in Chichester (Add Mss 20,113-20,155); James Longley & Co., Ltd., building contractors of Crawley (Add Mss 20,771-20,774); King and Barns Ltd. of Horsham, wine and spirit merchants (Add Mss 20,775-20,780); Lintott & Co., walking stick makers of Witley in Surrey (Add Mss 20,929-21,048); and Richard William Hull of Arundel, butcher (Add Mss 21,049-21,088)

This volume also includes the catalogue of the papers of James Dallaway, the historian of Sussex, and his family (Add Mss 20,186-20,259); William Robinson of Gravetye, the naturalist (Add Mss 20,179-20,185); and some musical and artistic papers of C.H.B. Jaques (Add Mss 20,473-20,479). The documents range in date from a lease of land in Kirdford in 1329 (Add Mss 20,494) to photographs of the White family of Ivy Cottage, Bignor in 1978

No index has been provided for this volume, as all the relevant details of this and all previous volumes, have been included in the card indexes of persons, places, manors and subjects which are to be found in the Search Room of the County and Diocesan Record Offices

Students are again asked to exercise care in quoting references and to use the form indicated in the introduction to the first volume
