Commissioners of Sewers for the Lewes and Laughton Levels

Subjects:
  • Drainage engineering
  • Fishery resources
Administrative / biographical background:

The jurisdiction of commissioners of sewers derived from letters patent issued under the Statute of Sewers of 1531. Under the terms of the Land Drainage Act 1930 the powers of the sewer commissioners continued in force as an internal drainage board unless or until the commission was determined by a scheme made and approved under Part II of the Act. The powers of the Lewes and Laughton Levels Commissioners were abolished in 1939 and replaced by the River Ouse Catchment Board (internal drainage).
