Immediate source of acquisition:
Originally deposited, at a date unknown, in the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Library
Administrative / biographical background:
The Hunt family practice in Stratford began with the appointment of the twenty-two year-old William Hunt as town clerk in 1753. He died in 1783. Two of his sons, Charles Henry Hunt (1763-1817) and Thomas Hunt (1768-1837) succeeded him in this post and also carried on the legal practice he had established. Thomas Hunt was succeeded by his son, William Oakes Hunt (1795-1874).
Most of this collection derives from business with the firm's clients during the period that Thomas Hunt and his son, William Oakes Hunt, managed the practice. On the latter's death, his son, another Thomas (1831-1906) carried on the firm, later bringing in a partner, Robert Lunn. The firm is still extant, under the name Robert Lunn and Lowth. Later papers form deposit DR 27.
