Description:
Petitioners: Community of Bayonne.
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: The community of Bayonne make seven requests:1) They state that the [unnamed] Count has ordered them to go to Aux, which is four long days' journey from Bayonne, and fearing that harm will come to the King if they leave the city, which is situated on the borders of Navarre and Castile, and surrounded with enemies, they have refused to do so.2) They ask that toll might not be taken from people in the passes towards Bordeaux, as the people of Aquitaine do not pay.3) They ask that the letters close to be given to John Dardir might be open, as it would harm them if they were closed; and they ask the King to defend their city and fortify it with liberties.4) They claim that the seneschal is maliciously delaying choosing a mayor from the candidates they have suggested to him, and ask that if he continues to delay beyond the term set by the King, they might be able to choose one themselves.5) They request 200 marks that the King has promised to pay them but has not done so.6) They request letters patent on the gift made by the King to his son Edward of the land of Gascony, so that they can do the King's will and so that Gascony may be separate from the King's realm.7) They present the grievances of the parishioners of Messanges, who had to leave their parish when Arnold William de Marcan wrongly took it from the King. They request letters patent on this, and warn the King that if the Count returns to Gascony it will be greatly to his harm and that of the land.
