Title: Tithe Commission and Successors: Tithe Files
Description:

Correspondence of the Tithe Commission concerned with proceedings for the commutation of tithes.

There is no tithe file relating to any City of London parish or liberty within the walls except St Leonard, Foster Lane because all payments in lieu of tithes within the City were expressly excluded from the provisions of the Tithe Commutation Act 1836.

Date: 1836-2000
Arrangement:

By county and then by tithe district, broadly (but not strictly) in alphabetical order.

The sequence of English counties begins part-way through Cheshire; Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and the remainder of Cheshire are placed after Yorkshire; Hampshire (which the Tithe Commissioners referred to as the County of Southampton) comes between Somerset and Staffordshire. Welsh counties follow the English counties. Some files were placed out of sequence at the end of the series.

Selection and destruction information: The contents of the files were heavily 'weeded' in the early twentieth century, before they arrived at the Public Record Office. The amount of papers in the files now varies considerably. Some of the files now comprise only the file cover. The cover may, however, be annotated with information such as whether all tithes in the parish were merged.

Administrative / biographical background:

Records date back to the Board of Stamps and Taxes which later became Inland Revenue in 1849. Inland Revenue was superseded by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in 2005, for which HMRC has responsibility for records pertaining to its predecessors’ records, under which HMRC has authority over today
