Reference: SC 8/222/11088
Description:
Petitioners: Laurence de Allerthorp, master of St Edmund's Hospital, Gateshead.
Name(s): de Allerthorp, Laurence
Addressees: King.
Occupation: master of St Edmund's Hospital, Gateshead
Nature of request: Laurence de Allerthorp, master of the hospital of St Edmund in Gateshead, states that he held the hospital by the collation of the Bishop of Durham, but that the king had sued a quare impedit against the bishop and Fenrother regarding the right of presentment. This suit is pending before the justices, and the king meanwhile also appointed Levesham to the office. Levesham now claims to have been forcibly ejected, even though he never had possession, and secured letters to Claxton (Levesham's cousin) and Emeldon to maintain him in possession and eject the petitioner. Allerthorp therefore requests that this commission be superseded until the plea is judged.
Nature of endorsement: [on face] The king has granted this bill by the advice of the chancellor.Montagu.
Places mentioned: Gateshead, [Northumberland]; Nottingham, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned: John [Fordham], Bishop of Durham; Adam Fenrother, late master of St Edmund's Hospital, Gateshead; Richard de Levesham; Thomas de Claxton; William Emeldon; [John] Montagu.
