Description:

Southern Africa: 'A Map of Marotseland and the neigbouring regions, Principally from Surveys and Explorations by Major A St Hill Gibbons 1895-96, 1998-1900 assisted... by Captain F C Quicke and Captain J Stevenson-Hamilton': (covering territory now in Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia and Zambia), showing the routes of expeditions, roads, waterways and terrain. Key to routes; reference note on geographical positions. [Printed by] G Philip and Son, London and Liverpool; published in The Geographical Journal, 1901. MS additions, coloured, showing the approximate division between the rising ground and the plain, and the [Barotse] boundary added from the 'rough temporary map' mentioned in Gibbons's report on the western and northern boundary of Barotseland. Originally enclosed in an Intelligence Division letter, 1 October 1901, which explains that the MS additions may be unreliable; the whereabouts of Gibbons's 'rough temporary map' is unknown.
