Description:

Marlborough to the emperor [Joseph I]: in accordance with the request of the states [general] that one of them should remain in the low countries, he requests that Prince Eugene may return to relieve him in late February. The need for augmentation of the troops, as the French will bring fifty-one battalions and fifty-two squadrons to the low countries from the Rhine and Italy for the next campaign, more than they had in the last. The Netherlands has exhausted itself by its efforts. He asks for all the assistance the emperor [Joseph I] can give without drawing from Prince Eugene's 20,000 men. It is likely that this will be the last campaign of the war, and so the terms of the peace depend on its success. Dated at The Hague. ff. 268, 269
