Marlborough [to Harley]: the army has made three days' march on the Rhine, but Marlborough is awaiting the electress of Bavaria's response. He hopes to take Landau before the end of the year's campaigning. Vienna has sent troops through the Tirol to the duke of Savoy's assistance. Count Maffei has left for Turin to report to the duke. Intercepted French correspondence indicates that the enemy lost 40,000 men killed, wounded and deserted since the battle [of Blenheim]. Dated at camp at Söflingen. ff. 133, 134
