This series contains files of the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and subsequently of the Department of the Environment. They concern local government boundaries and organisation, loan consents, planning matters, local government policy and radioactive substances. Some files relate to specific local authorities and areas. Subjects discussed in the files include the disposal of radioactive wastes, the licensing of nuclear installations, markets, air pollution, coastal protection, sport, water supplies, pedestrian walkways and local parliamentary bills.

This series also includes papers of the Family Services Committee on Local Authority and Allied Personal Social Services (Seebohm Committee) and of the Working Party on Refuse Collection. Some files have been reregistered from the 91000 series.
