This series consists of Admiralty muniment books (entry books containing copies of commissions, letters patent and warrants relating to the appointments of Lords High Admiral, Vice-Admirals, Judges, Registrars, Marshals and other officers in the High Court of Admiralty). The series also includes copies of commissions empowering Lords of the Admiralty to appoint officers of Vice-Admiralty courts in British colonies. Earlier volumes contain entries concerning the jurisdiction and procedure of the Admiralty, with notes on treaties, statutes and miscellaneous commissions, and some grants, petitions, deeds and accounts. The earliest entry in the first volume was made in 1585, but there are several copies of earlier commissions, and a list of the Admirals of England from 1264. |
