Description:

This series consists mainly of diaries kept by Col Prescott during his service with the Control Commissions for Germany and Austria in 1945-48, with a series of annexed papers. Some diary entries go back to 1940 and include the period when Col Prescott was co-ordinating local resources policy for the Allied Forces in North Africa and Italy. The annexes to his diaries include a complete set of all Bipartite Board documents published up to 26 April 1948.

From 1 May 1945 to 25 March 1946 J L Prescott served with the Economic Division of the British Element of the Allied Commission for Austria, and dealt with the allocation of local resources, price control and rationing; from 26 March until April 7 1948 he served with Control Commission for Germany (British Element) and was the first British secretary of the Bipartite Board.
