Description:

This series contains general correspondence from the British consulate (later embassy) in Batavia (from 1950, Jakarta), Dutch East Indies (later Indonesia). Files relating to the Balibo massacre were made available in November 2002 after representations were made to the FCO by families of the victims of the massacre.

Separated material:

Records for the period prior to the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, 1942 to 1946, were destroyed. The records for 1949 to 1963 were similarly lost when the embassy was looted and burned by rioters in September 1963.
