Description:

Ministry of Education and Department of Education and Science Inspectors' reports under the provisions of the Education Act 1944 on further education, of facilities for adult education provided in places other than higher education institutions and major further education establishments.

Such education can include general subjects (usually to no higher than GCE 'A' level), vocational training, and recreational activities. The majority of the reports in this series are thus concerned with evening institutes and adult education centres and colleges, but there are also reports on the education activities within HM prisons and borstal institutions.

In addition to those establishments for which the local education authorities are immediately responsible, there are reports on bodies in receipt of a direct grant from the Ministry of Education and/or its successor department.

Administrative / biographical background:

Section 41 of the Education Act 1944 places a duty on local education authorities to secure the provision for their area of adequate facilities for further education. Under section 42(4), these authorities are required to have regard to any facilities for further education provided for their area by universities, educational associations, and other bodies including voluntary organisations.
