Title: General Nursing Council for England and Wales: Registrar: Correspondence and Papers, General
Description:

This series contains unregistered papers of the Registrar of the General Nursing Council for England and Wales (GNC).

The files contain a wide range of subjects brought to the attention of the council including contacts with other medical and professional bodies, (particularly the Joint Board of Clinical Nursing Studies, the Council for Education and Training of Health Visitors, and the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work), the Department of Health and Social Security and other government departments, and local authorities.

The series also includes files containing correspondence with committees of enquiry, notably the Briggs Committee on Nursing, and the Jay Committee on Mental Handicap Nursing and Care, and files concerning the implementation of, and action arising from, EEC directives dealing with medical, nursing and midwifery matters.

Other files concern training, examinations and teaching hospitals; special arrangements in wartime; recruitment, personnel and accommodation matters; the organisation of the National Health Service; and the administration of the register and roll of nurses. The series also includes some photographs, largely of Chairwomen of the GNC, council members, staff and special events. Later files concern arrangements for commemorative products and events prior to the abolition of the GNC in 1983, and arrangements concerning the staffing and organisation of the successor bodies to the GNC, the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, and the English and Welsh National Boards for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting.
