Administrative / biographical background:

The Ministry of Supply's (and later Ministry of Aviation's) Directorate of Materials and Explosives Research and Development was the headquarters directorate responsible for the funding and direction of work at the Explosives Research and Development Establishment, as well as a Materials Advisory Service in London, a Materials Laboratory at Waltham Abbey and the Tropical Testing Establishment in Nigeria.

The Chemical Research and Development Department, was created in 1945 at the former Royal Gunpowder Factory, Waltham Abbey. In 1948 it became the Explosives Research and Development Establishment. It passed successively to the Ministry of Aviation in 1959 and the Ministry of Technology in 1967.
