Administrative / biographical background:

Nyasaland became a British protectorate in 1889 and named the British Central Africa Protectorate in 1893. In 1904 relations with the protectorate were transferred from the Foreign Office to the Colonial Office and in 1907 the name Nyasaland was resumed.
