Description:

Medical and surgical journal of the Star transport ship for 6 April to 13 July 1825 by Ninian McMorris, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in conveying emigrants to Quebec.

Folios 1-2: Denis Linehan, aged 17, emigrant; disease or hurt, cut his head in two places and contused his left leg, by a fall down the fore hatchway. Put on sick list, 6 May 1825, at Cove of Cork. Discharged cured, 15 May 1825.

Folio 2: John Buckley, aged 50, emigrant; disease or hurt, inguinal hernia of some standing, issued a truss. Put on sick list, 7 May 1825, at Cove of Cork. Discharged cured, 7 May 1825.

Folio 2: Thomas Fitzgerald, aged 2 months, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe cold, fever, cough and constipation. Put on sick list, 7 May 1825. Died, 10 May 1825. A two month old child that had been born prematurely and was taken ill on the way to join the ship at Cove of Cork.

Folios 2-3: Ellen Shehan, aged 3 months, emigrant; disease or hurt, very severe cold and cough, her chest much affected. Put on sick list, 13 May. Died, 15 May 1825. Caught a very severe cold on her way to join the ship.

Folio 3: Martha McCarroll, aged 16, emigrant; disease or hurt, a large abscess on the left thigh on the site of an old burn. Put on sick list, 8 May 1825, at Cove of Cork. Discharged cured, 23 May 1825. Treated with an oatmeal poultice.

Folios 3-5: John Curtin, aged 32, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe pain in the left side of the chest of the chest, with cough and difficulty of breathing, pulse full and hard. Put on sick list, 10 May 1825, at Cove of Cork. Discharged cured, 23 June 1825. He got very wet on his way to join the ship and slept in his wet clothes, which brought on lumbago.

Folio 6: Catherine Foley, aged 30, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe headache, with pain in the epigastric region, has been very sea sick and is much debilitated. Put on sick list, 15 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 24 May 1825.

Folios 6-7: Mrs Daly, aged 36, emigrant; disease or hurt, very sea sick, bowels much constipated. Put on sick list, 15 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 25 May 1825.

Folios 7-8: Johanna Ahern, aged 22, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe headache, with pain in the stomach and bowels, pregnant and has not had a bowel movement for some days. Put on sick list, 15 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 24 May 1825.

Folios 8-9: Adam Shouldess, aged 1 year, emigrant; disease or hurt, bad cough and cold. Put on sick list, 18 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 8 June 1825. He had been very subject to coughs and colds since born and got very wet on the way to join the ship.

Folios 9-11: Thomas Curtin, aged 15, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe headache with pain in his breast, has not had a passage in his bowels for some days. Put on sick list, 21 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 26 June 1825.

Folio 12: Catherine Daly, aged 14, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe pain in the bowels, has not had a passage for 5 or 6 days. Put on sick list, 20 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 11 June 1825.

Folio 13: Johanna Daly, aged 8, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe headache and pain in the chest, no passage in her bowels for 5 or 6 days. Put on sick list, 22 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 7 June 1825.

Folios 13-14: Michael Mullane, aged 43, emigrant; disease or hurt, a cold shivering fit, followed by heat, feverish, pulse very little accelerated, not had a passage in his bowels for 5 days. Put on sick list, 23 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 28 May 1825.

Folios 14-15: Mrs Finnegan, aged 30, emigrant; disease or hurt, headache and pain in the bowels, has not had a passage for the last week and has been very sea sick. Put on sick list, 27 May 1825, at sea. Discharged cured, 7 June 1825.

Folios 15-16: Johanna Hickey, aged 32, emigrant; disease or hurt, severe griping and purging with much pain in the region of the uterus. Put on sick list, 30 May 1825, at sea. Delivered to Mr Reade at Prescott, 13 July 1825.

Folios 17-18: James M Carroll, aged 24, emigrant; disease or hurt, slight pain in his breast, pulse regular, bowels constipated. Put on sick list, 5 June 1825, at the Banks of Newfoundland. Discharged cured, 26 June 1825.

Folio 18: John Foley, aged 18 months, emigrant; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 31 May 1825, at sea. Died, 26 June 1825. Had almost recovered when they arrived at La Chine but the motion of a cart form Montreal to La Chine and then the crowding in the steam boat affected him badly.

Folio 19: Honora Finnegan, aged 6 months, emigrant; disease or hurt, purging and sickness at stomach. Put on sick list, 16 June 1825, at sea. Died, 24 June 1825. Her mother had been ill with obstinate constipation and could not wean her as she would not feed.

Folio 20: Amos Swytzer, aged 1 year, emigrant; disease or hurt, very much purged and griped with much fever, had been much affected all the passage with worms and bowel complaints. Put on sick list, 29 June 1825, at La Chine. Left with Mr Reade at Prescott, 13 July 1825. Signed, Ninian McMorris Surgeon.

Folio 22: Abstract of the preceding journal, being a summary of all cases contained therein. Continued fevers, 1; Fluxes, 4, of which, 2 died on board; Wounds and accidents, 2; Pulmonic Inflammation, 7, of which 2 died on board; Hernia, 1; Constipation, 5.

Folio 22: General Remarks. 'There is nothing particularly deserving of remark in above cases: the four that died were young children badly taken care of as their mothers were sick in most instances.' Signed, Ninian McMorris, Surgeon.
