Description:

Medical journal of the convict ship Sesostris by John Dulhunty, surgeon and superintendent, for 5 November 1825 to 22 March 1826. The said ship conveyed convicts from Portsmouth to New South Wales.

Folios 1-6: W Warren, private, 57th Regiment; disease or hurt, erysypelatous inflammation of left arm extending over the scapula of that side. Put on sick list, 17 November 1825 on board. Discharged 17 January 1826 to duty.

Folios 2-3: G Farnham, private, 57th Regiment, servant to Major Campbell; disease or hurt, extreme costiveness with headache, pulse full, and skin hot, with a coated tongue. Put on sick list, 19 November 1825. Discharged to duty 5 Dec 1825.

Folios 3-4: George Archer, convict, aged 27; disease or hurt, sprained ankle in consequence of slipping on the deck in a gale of wind. Put on sick list, 5 December 1825. Died 1pm on 11 December 1825.

Folios 3-4: H Benson, seaman, aged 28; disease or hurt, severe quotidian ague. Put on sick list, 9 December 1825. Died 8am on 11 December 1825.

Folios 4-9: Samuel Fairman, private, 57th Regiment, aged 20; disease or hurt, fever. Put on sick list, 15 December 1825. Discharged 22 March 1826 to Sydney hospital.

Folios 5-6: Henry Ensley, seaman, aged 32; disease or hurt, fever, pain in the chest and cough. Put on sick list, 15 December 1825. Discharged 6 January 1826 to duty.

Folio 5: 31 December 1825: divided a portion of the hospital off today for the accommodation of Mrs Hynes, a soldier's wife, she being in labour and the soldier’s berth extremely crowded at 9pm she was delivered of a girl.

Folio 5: 2-4 January 1826: Mrs Hynes nearly recovered.

Folio 6: Mark Lane, private, 57th Regiment, aged 22; disease or hurt, fever and dysentery. Put on sick list, 7 January 1826. Discharged 20 January 1826 to duty.

Folio 6: 7-8 January 1826: Mrs Hynes perfectly recovered, and discharged on 8 January 1826.

Folio 6: 12 January 1826: Several convicts applied this morning with costive bowels gave them purgative medicine.

Folio 6-8: James Moy, convict; disease or hurt, fever. Put on sick list, 14 January 1826. Discharged 20 February 1826.

Folios 6-9: Thomas Howell, convict; disease or hurt, fever. Took 24 ounces of blood from his arm. Put on sick list, 16 January 1826. Discharged 22 March 1826 to Sydney hospital.

Folio 6: 18 January 1826: Several convicts applied this morning with headache and irregular bowels gave them purgatives as necessary.

Folio 6: 24 January 1826: Several of the guard and convicts applied this morning with slight fever and headache gave them emetics and purgatives as necessary.

Folios 6-8: W Bray, convict, aged 22; disease or hurt, fever and retention of urine. Put on sick list, 30 January 1826. Died 4pm on 5 February 1826.

Folios 7-9: James Bry, convict, aged 22; disease or hurt, ophthalmia. Put on sick list, 30 January 1826. Discharged 22 March 1826 to Sydney hospital.

Folio 8: James Cotterell, convict; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 5 February 1826. Discharged 21 February 1826.

Folio 8: E Jennings, private, 57th Regiment; J Steadman, private, 57th Regiment; S Harcastle, private, 57th Regiment; D Mitchell, private, 57th Regiment; R Stevenson, private, 57th Regiment; all admitted to hospital on 9 February 1826 with the itch. All discharged to duty on 14 February 1826, perfectly cured.

Folio 8: J Grant, soldier; disease or hurt, scalded leg from a pan of boling water being thrown on it accidentally. Immediately applied turpentine and gave him purgative medicine. Put on sick list, 16 February 1826. Discharged to duty on 25 February 1826.

Folio 9: J Kensley, seaman; disease or hurt, great debility, pain in the region of the liver and loss of appetite. Put on sick list, 1 March 1826. Discharged 22 March 1826 to Sydney hospital.

Folio 9: 9 March 1826: Several convicts applied this morning with slight fever and costive bowels gave them purgative medicine as necessary.

Folio 9: Jesse Mills, convict; disease or hurt, great debility, fever. Put on sick list, 13 March 1826. Discharged 22 March 1826 to Sydney hospital.

Folio 9: J Winifred, seaman; disease or hurt, incision of the knee about half an inch in length produced by a blow from an axe, gave him some plaister and ordered him to be kept quiet. Put on sick list, 13 March 1826. Discharged 22 March 1826 to Sydney hospital.

Folios 9-10: George Milford, convict; disease or hurt, fever. Put on sick list, 17 March 1826. Died 20 March 1826.
