Description:

Medical and surgical journal of the Marquis of Hastings convict ship for 23 May to 28 October 1828 by William Rae, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in a voyage to Sydney, New South Wales.

Folios 1-2: Daniel McCarthy, aged 19, convict; case number 1: disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 21 July 1828. Discharged 26 July 1828 cured.

Folio 2: William King, aged 23, private, soldier, 57 Regiment; case number 2: disease or hurt, int fever. Put on sick list, 28 July 1828. Discharged 3 August 1828 to duty.

Folio 3: Robert Stafford, aged 24, convict; case number 3: disease or hurt, pyrexia. Sentenced to seven years of transportation for stealing two pigs. Put on sick list, 24 July 1828. Discharged 3 August 1828 cured.

Folios 3-4: Michael Connor, aged 24, soldier; case number 4: disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 29 July 1828. Discharged 8 August 1828 to duty.

Folio 4: Charles Brewhouse, aged 21, convict; case number 5: disease or hurt, pyrexia. Sentenced to seven years transportation for felony. Put on sick list, 11 August 1828. Discharged 20 August 1828 to duty.

Folio 5: James Wiseman, aged 16, convict; case number 7: disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Sentenced to seven years transportation for stealing a great coat and looking glass. Put on sick list, 15 August 1828. Discharged 18 August 1828 cured.

Folio 5: James Bristow, aged 22, convict; case number 8: disease or hurt, synocha. Sentenced to seven years transportation for stealing eight sheep skins. Put on sick list, 28 August 1828. Discharged 30 August 1828 cured.

Folios 5-6: Edward Schofield, aged 40, convict; case number 9: disease or hurt, scurvy. Sentenced to seven years transportation for felony. Put on sick list, 4 September 1828. Discharged 13 October 1828 at Sydney convalescent.

Folio 7: Michael Woods, aged 4 months, infant; case number 10: disease or hurt, hydrocephalus. This infant belongs to one of the soldiers of the guard. Put on sick list, 4 September 1828. Died 20 September 1828. Surgeon intended to open the head and abdomen of the infant, but the parents were strongly averse to it. Possibly since the Surgeon may have detected some ‘unequivocal marks of their negligence’.

Folios 7-8: George Martin, aged 19, convict; case number 11: disease or hurt, catarrh. Sentenced to seven years transportation for stealing corn. Put on sick list, 23 September 1828. Discharged 14 October 1828 convalescent.

Folio 8: James Stillwell, aged 19, seaman; case number 12: disease or hurt, cephalagia. Put on sick list, 23 September 1828. Discharged 26 September 1828 to duty.

Folio 9: Abraham Schofield, aged 40, convict; case number 13: disease or hurt, scurvy. Found guilty of felony and sentenced to transportation for life. Put on sick list, 25 September 1828. Discharged 14 October 1828 cured.

Folio 10: John Shortis, aged 24, private, soldier; case number 14: disease or hurt, contusion caused by a fall. Put on sick list, 26 September 1828. Discharged 29 September 1828 to duty.

Folios 10-11: Thomas Smith, aged 26, convict; case number 15: disease or hurt, pyrexia. Sentenced to transportation for life for house breaking. By trade a blacksmith. Put on sick list, 27 September 1828. Discharged 14 October 1828 cured.

Folio 12: Thomas Winterburn, aged 54, convict; case number 16: disease or hurt, scurvy. Sentenced to transportation for seven years for stealing a table cloth. Put on sick list, 28 September 1828. Discharged 14 October 1828 not being fit for assignation was sent on shore to the hospital in a state of convalescence.

Folios 14-15: Surgeon’s general remarks: I may state that in a detachment od soldiers and convicts under the command of Major Campbell of the 57th Regiment at Melville Island where the victualling, with the exception of spirits was the same, the consequence was that the convicts suffered severely from scurvy, whilst the soldiers remained free from it, and upon issuing spirits to the former also they speedily recovered.
