Administrative / biographical background:

The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) was established on 1 October 2007 following the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The OPG replaced the Public Guardianship Office which had been established on 1 April 2001 to protect the financial well-being of people with mental incapacity.

The OPG supports and promotes decision making for those who lack capacity or would like to plan for their future, within the framework of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The OPG supports the Public Guardian in registering Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPA), Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) and supervising Court of Protection (COP) appointed Deputies. It is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice.
