Administrative / biographical background:

The EDS was formed in 1948 to provide the compilers of the United Kingdom histories of the Second World War with campaign narratives and information about enemy policies and operations from original sources. Selected captured German documents, held at the time by the American authorities, were sent to EDS where copies were made. The originals were returned to Washington, until their restitution to the Federal German Government.

The Joint Consultative Committee on Captured Enemy Documents was concerned with the process of exchange of documents between Washington and London, and their ultimate restitution

The JCC operated under the auspices of the Foreign Office from 1947 until 1959 when it became a Cabinet Committee; it was dissolved in 1978.

The EDS was disbanded in 1988 on completion of the military histories.
