Description:

Treatise on Fortification. This is a manuscript proposing the fortification of the Anglo-Scots border on the line of the Roman Wall, with a preface addressed to the Queen, a summary of the 'argument', and 17 pages of text. The plan which accompanied the text appears to date from 1576, but the treatise may not have been drawn up until the Armada threatened a decade or so later, as suggested in the introduction to The Border Papers, I, viii-ix.
